Description:

Seed-collecting ants that run fairy rings around scientists or the mystery of the bare patches.

Summary / Notes:

In the March 2009 issue of Veld and Flora I wrote about fairy rings, heuweltjies and termitaria in southern Africa - all prominent and spectacular circular landscape features created by social insects. Of these features fairy rings are probably the most enigmatic, and have the most impact on travellers through the pro-Namib.
