Description:

Application of the transient electromagnetic method for groundwater exploration in Namibia.

Summary / Notes:

The Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) Method was introduced to the Department of water Affairs in Windhoek in 1994 within the framework of the German-Namibian Groundwater Exploration Project. The Namibian counterparts were trained in the application of the method and the interpretation of the data. The practical employment in the field was demonstrated. The TEM ground survey system is easy to handle and is inexpensive to run. This system extends the range of methods available to the DWA for determining the conductivity distribution in the ground down to a depth of several hundred metres. TEM was employed in selected areas within the project areas to demonstrate its application to different kinds of geology. This paper deals with its application in the Namib Desert, where fresh groundwater occurences were suspected to occur in fine sand filling buried river channels beneath the sand dunes of the Namib, since fresh groundwater had previously been found in drillholes in this area. Keywords: Namibia, Namib Desert, Kuiseb River, groundwater management, water exploration, geohydrology, hydrology, hydro-geology, geophysical research.
