UNDP. Namibia: Climate Change Adaptation Project

Description:

Namibia: Climate Change Adaptation Project.

Summary / Notes:

Namibia is expected to experience extreme events (droughts & floods) due to climate change. Although communities in Omusati region (pilot area) have lived in harsh environmental conditions for many years, their adaptive mechanisms are no longer adequate to withstand the onslaught of extreme climatic events. The Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) Project aims to develop and pilot a range of effective coping mechanisms that can assist subsistence farmers in Namibia’s North-Central regions to better manage and cope with climate change, including droughts and floods. The project is supporting the Ministry of Agriculture in scaling up the use of improved crop varieties such as Okashana 2, Kangara, Macia & Red sorghum, as well as cowpea seeds Nakare and Shindimba. The project distributed 12 000kg of improved seeds to 1000 vulnerable farmers across Omusati for this coming growing season. In addition, 110 small stock farmers have been supported with well-adapted goat rams for breeding purposes. 32 public institutions such as rural schools, clinics and agricultural centers have been supported with the use of rain water harvesting (RWH) tanks to capture rainwater from the rooftops. This technology has the potential of improving freshwater in areas where alternative water sources such as piped water are non-existent. It is believed that RWH will inculcate a new culture of harnessing rainwater among students, and in turn they may inspire their parents to do the same.
